Can we design a more understanding society?

Look at a future where design is used as a powerful tool to create societal change.

Trapped in a global crisis and becoming increasingly complacent in the discomfort within our own minds, each of us has been feeling Agitated, Anxious, and Uncertain.

COVID -19 brought helplessness and uncertainty to our lives and homes. Were we ready for the lockdown? Did we know what was coming? Caught absolutely unaware, we have been attempting every possible way to liberate ourselves from the government-sanctioned house arrest, neighbourhood insensitivities, professional disruptions, fear of the old normal, and the ensuing struggle to adapt to the new normal.

To add to this, socio-political events have been getting progressively more depressing. Everyone we speak to is making a concentrated effort to stay away from the news cycle. Entertainment channels too, are fast running out of things to offer. We’re experiencing inertia, numbed by choice, a voice paralysis caused by the weight of the world’s misfortunes or by the sheer lethargy of the media.

At Two, we have been sharing our fears and hopes with each other knowingly and unknowingly. Both on the personal and the professional front, we find ourselves questioning our journeys and practices. Coincidentally, this strangely opportune time has helped us articulate our collective unease. An unease that has pushed us to build a renewed approach towards our design practice.

Inspired by the First Things First manifesto and its interpretations over time, we can now clearly identify that our design practice too, has been trapped in the comfort of a convenient cocoon. However, the power of design to go beyond sits in our hearts. We are charged with a renewed purpose to inspire ourselves and others to embark on a journey where we can imagine a new future.

A future where design is used as a powerful tool to create societal change.

We have committed ourselves to the First Things First 2020 manifesto and will be working towards building ‘community-based efforts of justice, healing, co-existence, and mutual respect’. ‘2 Degrees of Separation’ is our humble initiative, a start towards designing a more understanding society.

Our digital postcards: A shareable communication tool

Starting with a digital postcard series, we will elucidate and question the cultural associations of discrimination. Each postcard will act as a question that poses the prevalent idea, its historical evolution, and deep rooted associations that have made them commonplace and made us insensitive and/or blind followers of it. It will give us an opportunity to build a deeper understanding, by stripping away the superficial differences and highlighting the core humanity that unites us all.
